Hey everyone! First I just wanted to talk about our visit to the Ronald McDonald House on Sunday. Amber, Kyle, and I made tacos! Not only was it a great experience but we also got some fellowship time in during our drive to Springfield. If you haven't already volunteered your time to help out the Ronald McDonald House, I would highly recommend going! We try to have at least one time per month!!!
I just wanted to say that we had our first meeting to start off Fall 2009. It was great meeting all of you :) I understand that some of you could not attend so here are some of our upcoming events:
~ We will be having a workday for the Teen Room this Saturday, September 12th from 9-12am.
~This is what I was mentioning earlier- we will be having another workday for the Ronald McDonald House on Friday, September 18th from 3-6pm.
~We will be stuffing envelopes for the United Way after our meeting on Tuesday, September 22nd from about 8:30-9:30.
~We will be working for the Prairieland Heritage Museum once again this year- Fri.-Sun. September 25th-27th (there will be a sign-up sheet at the next meeting)
~We will start working with the After-School Program again this year starting in October
~Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF/ Trick-or-Eat- Tuesday, October 27th. I would also highly recommend signing up to work this because it is a very rewarding experience!
Anywho! If you have any questions feel free to email me directly at nutt.emy@mail.ic.edu or our president Matt Roberts roberts.matt@mail.ic.edu or you can also e-mail our group circlek@ic.edu
I believe that we already have a great start to the year, and I am looking forward to working with all of you :)

Teen Room Update
Sorry its been so long since our last post. We have be super busy with the school year ending in a few days. Today 5 of us continued to work on the teen room and I am really happy with the progress. Just a few more touch ups with the paint, finish the bench seat and finish the pilars and we will be ready for carpet and hopefully the rest of the furniture.

Easter Party at the C-Center and Ronald McDonald House
Hey! So the Easter Party was SOO much fun. We played Easter BINGO with more residences than usual! Then the Easter Bunny showed up to hand out eggs and meet with all of the other residences. I know that after JJ was done with the service project, there was more "hop" in his step :o).
That night, we went to the Ronald McDonald House and made Au Gratin potatoes and Cheddar Hamburger Helper (IT WAS SOO GOOD!) We had a family stop by and say hi to us. It is good to see a direct impact of service to the community. The fridge was literally empty because they had not had anyone there cooking for a while. IC CKI really made a difference that day!
NOTE: Three service projects and over 70 hours of service were done this weekend!
The internet is slow... so I will get the photos out when I am in quicker internet speed this week!

A great Teen Room service project!
Hello!
Well today was our co-service project with APO! We had chapter members from Illinois College and Illinois State University show up and we got a LOT accomplished. One chalkboard is demolished, the walls are completely white, one door has one coat of paint, one coat of paint has been applied for the logo, and plenty more ideas are flowing for what the final look of the room will be like!
We had 4 ISU APO members, ~6 IC APO members, and 7 IC CKI members. These were not the numbers we were told when we were planning projects, but we still got a lot accomplished. Photos will be added at a later time!

Quotes about the Teen Room
"As the president of our Circle K Club, I was thrilled to see the enthusiasm our group has shown for this project since it was first introduced. As we design this special learning area for the teens of our community, we strive to accomplish far more than a mere room restoration project. Rather, we aim to develop within these teens the realization that learning and fun don't have to be separate - conversely, they should be united. Through this Teen Room project, the teens of the Jacksonville community will have the opportunity to truly focus on their education in a safe and welcoming environment. In doing so, they may finally begin to realize that the pursuit of higher education can become reality."
- Megan Kruse
“I hope that by working to create a teen center, we are able to provide Jacksonville area teenagers with a safe and healthy alternative for after-school activities. I want to make sure that the center is a fun place to study and hang out. I believe that if teens are given safe alternatives, they can be encouraged to stay on track which will help them achieve goals and make it to college and beyond.” – Heather Miller
“Public education in the Jacksonville community is mediocre; with the Teen Room, Jacksonville's public education will go from mediocre to excellent. The Teen Room is a means to educate students as well as help them succeed in life.” - Cora Ly Maffioli
"The development of the Boys and Girls Club Teen Room is a service project where the service initiative of CKI "Focusing on the Future: Children" is fulfilled. As a CKI member helping out with this Teen Room, I am allowing a place of refuge and intellect for the older students after helping the younger children there. By providing the Teen Room at this particular location, we are not simply providing a place of studying and relaxation; we are allowing the Boys and Girls Club to apply for a Teen Reach grant to help further their organizational goals and ideals." – JJ Sadler
“I can't begin to say how important this project is for the Jacksonville community. With the rising crime and poverty levels teens are more and more likely to get the chance to turn to crime in their free time. Building this room for the boys and girls club will hopefully keep the teens safe by giving them a fun and relaxing place to hang out. As well as give them the chance to make valuable friendships with the mentors to help the teens succeed.” – Matthew Roberts
“Service, fellowship, and leadership are the three key components of Circle K, and the Teen Room project for the Boys and Girls Club encompasses every one of these outstanding qualities. Our goal is to have every member participate in the Teen Room, which would fulfill service. Fellowship is an important quality that we, as Illinois College students, are developing even more through all of our continuous work on the Teen Room. We are inspiring the teens to become leaders in their Jacksonville community by showing that they can make a difference. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Do not go where the path may lead; instead go where there is no path and leave a trail.” I feel that Illinois College Circle K is doing just what the quote mentions in order for future students to have a brighter future away from the violence of today’s world.”
